History and About Us

Washington County Rescue Services, Inc. was formed in 2000 and combined the former Rescue Squads of Washington County into one agency. Washington County Rescue Services got it’s start as the Johnson City Emergency and Rescue Squad which was formed in 1952 and was the first chartered Rescue Squad in the state of Tennessee. As a pioneer in Emergency Medical and Rescue Services Washington County Rescue Services has been providing life-saving services to the citizens of Washington County and Johnson City for over fifty years. In 1980 the Johnson City Rescue Squad and the Washington County Ambulance Authority united to form Washington County – Johnson City Emergency Medical Services, Inc. which is the parent agency to Washington County Rescue Services.

Washington County Rescue Services is an all volunteer organization tasked with providing specialty rescue services and medical support to the citizens of Washington County and Johnson City.Washington County Rescue Services takes part in Search and Rescue, Dive Rescue and Recovery, and Swiftwater along with Washington County-Johnson City Emergency Medical Services, Inc. Our Medical Team covers events at Freedom Hall, various 5K’s and events around Washington County-Johnson City. Washington County Rescue Services is a non-profit 501c3 organization that relies solely on donations and fund raisers for its funding.

Mission Statement

The objective of Washington County Rescue Services is to render emergency medical care and appropriate rescue services in the event of accident, sudden illness, or disaster for the citizens of the community of Johnson City, Tennessee and Washington County, Tennessee. Rescue Services will provide excellence in dive rescue, hazardous materials response, medical care, and search and rescue services.

These quality rescue services may be afforded to other government agencies or authorities under terms of standing written mutual aid agreements or under express direction of the Captain of Washington County Rescue Services as deemed necessary to preserve and protect the health and safety of the populace.

The requirement and responsibility in providing the best patient care possible shall take precedence over any governing amendment, bylaw, policy or rule concerning this organization or its affiliates.
